Nominee Ryan Latest Victim of Senator Slam By Mary-Devon Dupuy Louisiana might be a red state, but some of our democrats are growing bluer after learning that Mitt Romney chose Paul Ryan as his running mate. State Senator Karen Carter Peterson (D) issued a statement today slamming presidential candidate “Willard, ‘Mitt’ Romney,” for his vice presidential pick. Peterson referred to Paul Ryan as “severely conservative,” among other grievances.
Peterson represents District 5, and also chairs the Louisiana Legislature’s Select Committee on Women and Children. The women’s rights advocate was vocal about her concerns regarding Ryan’s potential to widen the gender gap. “Congressman Ryan is wrong on virtually every issue, even on issues he claims to be his own. Ryan voted against Equal Pay for Women, opposes a woman’s right to choose even in the case of incest, rape, or when her health is threatened, and wants to completely defund women’s health services like Planned Parenthood,” said Peterson.
The Senator also voiced her dismay about Ryan’s fiscal policies, criticizing his voting record on Medicare and the Trouble-Asset Relief Program, as well as his avid support of the privatization of Social Security. Peterson compared Ryan’s limited government philosophy to our own governor’s. “Like Governor Jindal, Paul Ryan is all fiscal talk, no fiscal walk,” said Peterson. The senator dubbed the Romney-Ryan duo as “the go-back team,” referring to some the pair’s retro economic policy initiatives.
“Governor Jindal’s embrace of privatization, vouchers, endless corporate welfare, higher-education cuts, and budget-gimmickry are plunging our state into fiscal chaos…Still the Romney-Ryan go-back team want to duplicate Governor Jindal’s poor policy choices on a federal level.” |
