NoDef King Cake Walk Returns to Ogden

NoDef’s King Cake Walk returns to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art this Thursday night, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The second annual contest is inviting reigning champion Cake Café, along with a number of Carnival confectionary competitors. The 101 Drummers with War Chief Juan Pardo are performing for Ogden After Hours.

Guests can sample all of the cakes, then vote on their favorites. NoDef will count all of the votes and name a winner the next day. Guests can submit comments on the cakes through Twitter, for NoDef to include in our write up on Friday.

Traditional king cake makers such as Haydel’s and Gambino’s are sure to go fast, but tasters are becoming increasingly adventurous. Cake Café's apple and goat cheese confection took last year’s title. Another unconventional, local baker is Kelly Boffone, who owns the Peacebaker.

“Ours our dairy free, yeast free, kosher. People who can’t have traditional wheat or yeast risen king cakes can still get their king cake fix for Carnival,” explained Boffone, who was born and raised in New Orleans. “They taste like a cinnamon king cake, but the texture is more like a coffee cake,” she explained.

Participants include Bittersweet Confections, Gambino’s, Haydel’s, Sucre, the Peacebaker, Sweet Life Bakery, Cake Café, Gracious Bakery, Classic Golden Pecans, and Tartine.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and admission is $10. There will be a full bar.
