New Orleans Reaches 400th Shooting Victim This Year

New Orleans saw a short respite from gun-related violence earlier this month, but unfortunately the city’s crime problem rages on. Jeff Asher, local crime analyst and the man behind NOLA Crime News, noted that two shootings yesterday mark New Orleans’ 400th gun-related victim in 2017 — the fastest the city has reached this bleak milestone in the past seven years.

The two shootings on Tuesday (7.25) mark 400 shooting victims in Orleans Parish. As Asher noted, the city did not hit this mark until late fall the last two years, on October 2, 2016 and November 5, 2015. Not since 2010 has New Orleans had a summer that hit the 400 mark, when it occurred on August 21 of that year.

Asher has previously stated that gun-related violence in New Orleans is on a steady rise, with 2017 rates far ahead of statistics from the last two years. The city reached 300 shooting victims in Orleans Parish on May 31st of this year, while it did not hit the mark until early August in 2015 and 2016.

The crime analyst also noted that the homicide that occurred last night on the 800 block of Fourth St.marked the 30th shooting this month. As Asher stated, this finding makes “this month the 18th straight with 30+ shooting incidents.”
