New Orleans Hornets' Greivis Vasquez Honored at the White House

by E.J. Ruane

The White House honored New Orleans Hornts point guard Greivis Vasquez as a “Champion of Change” Friday. Each week, the White House chooses a segment of American life, then acknowledges individuals who affect their community in a positive way. Last week’s Champions were members of the Latin American community. Originally from Venezuela, Vasquez runs youth sports clinics in the South American country.

"It's a huge honor for Greivis. He does so much for the communities he serves," said Hornets spokeswoman Lindsay Mitchell. The Champion of Change program is part of President Obama’s “Winning the Future” initiative. Greivis was one of nine honorees.

"He reaches kids of all ages. Greivis encourages them to stay motivated, attend school. Mostly, he shares his love for basketball" says Mitchell.

During the last two off seasons Vasquez  also assisted with US State department's Sports Envoy program. The Diplomacy program was created to foster relations between the two countries. He brings his foreign relations home; Mitchell referenced his most recent event.

"Despite a shortened season, he always seeks opportunities," Mitchell said. "Last week he hosted a clinic at the International School."
