Negligence Leads to Death of Louisiana Tech Mascot, Tech XX

Up at Louisiana Tech University, the saga of Tech XX came to a sad end today. A search was on early this week for the beatified English bulldog, which is the Ruston school's live mascot, after an employee initially said the canine went missing Sunday after a bathroom break. The school offered up to $2,000 for info about his whereabouts. But it turned out the four-year-old died of heat stroke after being left outside, school officials announced today.

In a statement, Tech XX caretaker Dr. Patrick Sexton of Ruston's Sexton Animal Health Center said the employee went the "wrong way" about the situation "and attempted to cover it up." The worker's actions were deemed negligent, and was fired, Sexton said.

"My family, my staff and I are extremely upset at this tragic turn of events as I know the entire Louisiana Tech Family is as well," he said. "Tech XX was a member of our immediate family and a daily part of our lives for the past four years. We are devastated over the circumstances of his passing and there will be a large void in our hearts for some time to come."

The university relesaed a statement reading: “Louisiana Tech University was saddened to learn of Tech XX’s passing this past Sunday evening. He will be remembered for being a fan favorite and a symbol of the spirit of Louisiana Tech."

The tragedy surrounding Tech XX is not the only time sudden death has befallen the campus' live mascot. According to campus legend, a bulldog followed a group of students home in 1899, and they kept him. A fire later broke out in the house, and one student was left inside. According to the campus legend, the bulldog then ran back into the house, but did not return out alive. News of the bulldog's exploits spread through campus, and the students voted to nickname their teams the Bulldogs, and deemed an English bulldog as Tech with a roman numeral from then on out.
