Morning Call Beignets Back from the Burbs Photo Courtesy Morning Call Morning Call is coming back to the city with plans to transform City Park into an around-the-clock coffee and beignet destination. A French Quarter mainstay for nearly 100 years, the locally loved business has been in a favorite in Jefferson Parish since leaving its longtime Decatur Street spot in 1974, motivating many urbanites to make the drive to Metry. But this fall, Morning Call will be operating out of City Park’s Timken Center (Old Casino Building). Co-owner Robert Hennessey is thrilled to be serving “French Market Donuts,” in such a historic location.
Morning Call has been open since 1870, but they moved to Severn in Metairie in 1974. Hennessey said City Park is a perfect fit for such a traditional New Orleans destination.
“City Park is such a special place, I was born and raised in Mid-City, and the park is so beautiful,” Hennessey said. “It’s a good for us—the ambience, the building is so beautiful and unique to New Orleans.”
They’ll be open around the clock, serving their usual chicory coffee and beignets along with more substantial fare such as ice cream, jambalaya and gumbo.
“The café now is only open for seven hours,” Hennessey said. “They’re missing the best times.” Hennessey remembers his time eating beignets on Decatur fondly, when people still referred to them as “French Market Donuts.” He’s considering bringing curbside service back to the beignet business, although the plans aren’t finalized yet.
“People used to park diagonally, then someone would bring a tray to your window. We want to bring a little bit of nostalgia,” Hennessey said.
Construction will begin over the next couple of weeks, with plans to open sometime in the fall. A date has not yet been set. In the interim, restrooms will be open in the rear of the building. The park will sell light refreshments in the interim. |
