Model Behavior: Corps Responds to Isaac Accusations .After intimating as much yesterday, the Army Corps of Engineers officially announced plans to make models of Hurricane Isaac to trace storm surge. According to a Corps statement, the floodwall-building arm does not have a timetable for the models, but will make them publicly available.
The new steps come in response to winds of talk following Hurricane Isaac that the new surge barrier and floodwalls around New Orleans may have contributed to pushing water into Lake Pontchartrain, and in turn flooding St. Tammany and St. John the Baptist parishes.
The Corps statement seems to respond to those accusations by saying the storm hung around longer than other storms, and as a result saw a change in wind direction that pushed water toward the other side of Lake Pontchartrain. Other than four new floodgates, the Corps' footprint is essentially the same. Nevertheless, the corps said they will go through the modeling, at the request of elected officials.
