Aw, what’s the matter, son? You got a little headache? Yer gut feelin’ a little queasy? Well, guess what. I’m dead. So forgive me if I’m less than sympathetic towards a whiny sumbitch who can’t hold his liquor.
That said, maybe you oughta quit screwing around on NOLA Defender and read something a little more substantive. Take The Atlantic, for example. In case you missed it, those high-brow literary types recently published “12 Hangover Cures From Famous Heavy Drinkers.” Pay particular attention to the entry on Robert Mitchum. Those folks say Mitchum preferred a Ramos Gin Fizz after a long night of imbibin. That noir ninny shared his secret with Frank Sinatra who took to calling the concoction “mother’s milk” and then started calling Mitchum “mother.”
Well now. Isn’t that a fine how-do-you-do. Robert Mitchum, you say?
AIN’T YOU SONUVABITCHES EVER HEARD OF HUEY DAMN LONG?!
Ahem. Pardon me. I’m a little upset, you understand, since I’m the one who introduced this particular refreshing beverage to the wider world back in 1935. Hell, I had to fly my own bartender from the Hotel Roosevelt up to New York City just to show them big city boys how it’s done.
No damn respect. And it’s not just this whole “mother’s milk” business, either. They just opened up a new watering hole at Robert E. Lee Circle. And who did they name it after, this bar that sets right off a circle named for one of the South’s greatest heroes? Ernie Bellocq. Can you believe that? Naming a decent establishment after a pervert and a pornographer like he’s some kind of role model.
And don’t get me started on Capdeville. Y’all know ol’ Paul Capdeville? Captured by the Union Army and released, only to surrender later in North Carolina. His tenure as mayor of New Orleans was notable for a sewer system and a race riot. Nice job, Paul. And how is this stellar legacy rewarded? A gourmet rock-and-roll burger joint. And they even named the street after the bastard.
So lemme ask you this New Orleans: Have you forgotten the Kingfish? After everything he did for you. Free textbooks for the kids. Roads and bridges. Schools and hospitals. All of that, and what do I get in return? A rickety-ass bridge from Harahan to Westwego and a column in the NOLA Defender. You may still be steamed about that little incident with the National Guard, but I see you even made amends with the Spanish.
Thanks for nothin', you ingrates. (' ā) |
