Million Dollar Embezzlement Lands Woman on Letten's ListThe ship sailed Friday on a Mandeville woman's alleged million-dollar embezzlement scheme. The feds charged Melody Huie, 56, in a bill of information for stealing $1.37 million from a "local transportation company," and tax evasion, according to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office. In various social media accounts, Huie is listed as General Manager of Accounting for New Orleans-based Canal Barge Company. Huie's role in the company allowed her to make off with the money, according to court records.
From 2006-2011, Huie allegedly made 113 wire transfers from company funds to a personal bank account. Each transfer required two out of the company's three managers to approve it. As one of three members of the company authorized to approve a wire transfer, she executed the gambit by approving the movement of the money herself, then pretending to be one of the other managers of the company over the phone with a Chase customer service employee. The feds pinpointed a transfer in Sept., 2011, when about $18,000 was moved to her personal bank account in Tampa as part of what was described as an "investment transfer."
Huie is also accused of filing a false tax return that understated roughly $800,000 yearly income as $130,000.
If convicted, Huie could face up to 25 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. |
