Mardi Gras by the Numbers with Mayor MitchCBD -- Mardi Gras is a feast of creativity and a triumph of the human spirit. But, as any city worker can tell you, it's also a public works windfall. Whether it's picking up trash or getting the streets closed to make the parade run on time, city workers are involved at all levels to help The Greatest Free Show on Earth go off without a hitch. Today, Mayor Mitch, NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas and other brass stepped back to the podium once again to run down the stats from this year's Carnival season.
Overall, Landrieu, Serpas and others sought to paint Carnival 2012 as a safe and successfully-managed event. Mayor Mitch thanked the public for using common courtesy and common sense, which he called the "driving force behind whether mardi gras is safe or not."
Serpas, who on top of his duties as Chief patrolled the parade route on a horse, trumpeted called 2012 the "year of negotiations." With parading krewes, he said the police department successfully amended the Mardi Gras schedule. With Mardi Gras Indians, Serpas said the police changed their course, resulting in a police force that changed their actions at the end of Fat Tuesday. On the West Bank, Serpas said the police negotiated to add three blocks to the parade route to accomodate crowds.
And now for the full list of numbers:
90 Percentage of occupancy level in hotels 1056 Arrest actions within the 8th district 562 Arrests within 8th district during Carnival 2011 80 Percent growth in arrest actions from 2011-2012 115,000 Man hours spent for the law enforcement agencies 33 Gun arrests over Carnival 2 Shooting incidents reported via NOPD's eAlert 3 Blocks added on Algiers parade route 193 Kids picked up for curfew. 55 Percentage of those kids that were out beyond the newly-minted curfew restrictions 11 Guns recovered on parade route. 20 Most amount of time a parade got off to a late start. 40 Inmates that did cleanup for community service with NOPD 2 Average amount of hours the streets were cleaned after parades. 1035 Permit and license checks 121 Premit volations cited 700 Number of cars towed on the parade route 107 Parked cars over the parade route 1045 Neutral ground violations cited, including setting up encampments, roping off sections and blocking cross streets. ’)
