LSU Athletic Dept. Lends a Hand to Academics, Mike the TigerAs football season draws nigh, the LSU Athletic Department is doling out a few gifts to help keep the lights on for the Tiger faithful, and one real tiger. On Monday, the Department announced a one-time contribution of $4 million to the academic section of the university to help cover costs. The contribution comes as the university faces stiff budget cuts from the state. According to LSU, the one-time contribution is the largest of its kind in school history.
"It is important for Athletics to play a role in the central mission of a university, and LSU Athletics is in the unique position to provide this financial support in a time of budgetary need," said Athletic Director Joe Alleva.
The athletic program kicks over $6 million to academics annually as part of the university's operating budget.
Mike the Tiger is also getting some swankier digs. Mike VI (aka Roscoe Mike), the live bengal that LSU parades into Tiger Stadium on gamedays, is having his Habitat spiffed up just to make sure he still has it better than Truck Stop Tony. LSU will spruce up the den with some decorative paving, new lighting, landscaping and drainage improvements, The renovations to the highly-trafficked attraction are being paid for with private funds that were raised by Tiger Athletic Foundation. No word yet if this will make Mike Les Miles' tiger son. |
