Louisiana Named One of the Least Energy Expensive States in America

We’re deep in the throes of summer in the city, and one of the best ways to keep cool is sit back and cranked up the AC and cool off with a beverage or two. It goes without saying, however, that beating the heat comes at a cost. According to a new study, Louisiana is one of the best states to live on a budget.

WalletHub conducted the survey, analyzing the fifty states and the District of Columbia on key criteria including costs for electricity, natural gas, motor fuel, and home heating oil. The team of researchers drew upon data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Federal Highway Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

According to the findings, Louisiana came in at $258 for total energy cost — ranking 11th on the list. The Boot was one of few Southeastern states included in the top 20 least expensive states, alongside the District of Columbia (in first place), Florida (17th place), and Kentucky (20th place).

Louisiana came in 14th place for highest electricity costs in the country, with an estimated $142 per month. Several more in-depth metrics in the study pointed to the complex placement of electricity and energy usage in the Boot. Though Louisiana ranked in second place for lowest electricity price behind Washington state, the Boot came in first place for highest electricity consumption per consumer.

The state came in 44th place for monthly natural-gas costs, with an average of $19 per month. Louisiana clocked on at $97 per month for motor fuel costs, placing 38th on the list. Louisiana also scored the 42nd spot on the home heating-oil ranking, joining 20 other states with a $0 cost per month.
