Lee-n On Me

Thoughts on a Katrina Documentary

5 years after the Storm, Spike Lee brought the voice of New Orleans back into the national conversation. When the Levees Broke, the Emmy winning documentary.

The film will hopefully be the seminal documentary, produced in the gaping wounds that were in those mental moments after Hurricane Katrina. That distinct, defiant, voice that was so resonant has been picked back up. I am sure that all over America, with any number of things creating the cacophony that creates the 24 hour news cycle, people wonder what happened to New Orleans. In If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise, Lee picks up the story almost where it started, but we lived where this story is going. Again, its beautiful, again its traumatic, again it’s us. As the first part ends, the culture reveals itself. Tragic, hopeful, tenacious, and most importantly, still fighting.  We are New Orleans, as much as Treme has tried to spin a story about us, Spike Lee has let the people speak for themselves.

As much as people didn’t know about the history of New Orleans in the days after Katrina, the national consciousness hasn’t really kept up, the rest of America hasn’t really kept up. From the destruction of the projects to the ongoing struggle of the future of Charity Hospital, Lee puts the spotlight on the ongoing struggles that still bring our city together, and at the same time tears our city apart. He brings the chorus of voices together. Foot fetishes, cursing, despair, joy and our deep resolution to bring our city back.

Lost Love Lounge will be screening Part II of “If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise,” which airs Tuesday night at 8:00 PM on HBO.

('DiggThis’)

It was great watching this

It was great watching this with other New Orleanians at the Lost Love. We laughed, we cried, we drank High Life.
