Defender Picks

LASEN Candidates (sans Cassidy) to Debate Tonight

Tonight, undecided GNO voters can head over to Jefferson Parish to hear the candidates for Senator debate. Sort of. Incumbent Senator Mary Landrieu(D) will square off against Colonel Rob Maness(R) at 6:30p.m. at Kenner City Hall. Conspicuously absent will be challenger Representative Bill Cassidy.

Representative Cassidy’s office declined to comment on the reasoning behind their abstention.

Maness is looking forward to the evening after picking up several high profile endorsements in the last few weeks. The candidate told NoDef, ”I'm eager to highlight our #SolutionsForUs plans and show the #ClearContrast between our positive campaign and my opponents' negative campaigns. It's important for the voters to hear from every candidate who is serious about tackling the challenges facing our country."

Landrieu’s campaign attacked Cassidy’s planned absence. “Congressman Cassidy has an interesting playbook he’s trying to utilize in this race, and that’s hoping to represent more people by making himself even less available,” said Fabien Levy, Communications Director for the Landrieu campaign. “At a time when Louisiana need the courage of people like Senator Landrieu to fight for important issues, Congressman Cassidy is embarking on a cowardly game of statewide hide-and-seek.”

Originally, five debates were scheduled before Election Day. Cassidy declined the first three events, one in Monroe and two in New Orleans. Landrieu and Maness both committed to all of these meetings. Cassidy’s campaign said that they will participate in two events, the first on October 14th in Shreveport and the second on Oct. 29th in Baton Rouge.

Kenner City Hall is located at 1801 Williams Boulevard. The event is free and open to the public.
