Krewe of Chewbacchus Fashion Show Phasers in Galactic Carnival

by Megan Pearl

So Chewbacca, a Dr. Who Catkind Nun, and and some regular guy walk into a bar… because it’s time for the fourth annual “Set Your Phasers to… Stunning!” fashion show from the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus.  The sci-fi (and beyond) krewe won't take it to the street until Feb. 22, but they'll be stepping out in style on Saturday (1-25) at the Howlin' Wolf.

“We’ve got some special surprises up our sleeve this year,” Space Commander Chewbaccacabra Ryan Ballard said. “We have special surprise judges, a group costume category, and a talent aspect this year.”

The group costume aspect will allow groups to do skits, but other talents like comedy routines, special skills, and even unicycle riding will be accepted. Ballard says he has an applause-o-meter to determine who wins.

Last year, a woman who built a screen accurate Catkind nun from Dr. Who won the costume contest. Prizes for winners this year will vary from lifetime membership to the krewe to PBR swag (such as a surfboard and cases of beer).

“It’s our biggest fundraiser for the parade,” Ballard said. “It helps us pay the brass band, the insurance, the police detail… just all the nuts and bolts.”

Entry is $10, but free for those entering the costume contest. Contesters must register by Thursday night at midnight.  Set Your Phasers to… Stunning!” is at the Howlin’ Wolf from 8-midnight on January 25.

Krewe of Chewbacchus is expecting about 700 drunken nerds to take to the Marigny streets for this year's parade on Feb. 22. Showing some love to the Trekkies, this year's theme is The Wrath of Khan-ival. This year's expanded galaxy also includes "Rolling Elliotts," recreating the famed cycling scene from ET.

While in past years the krewe has relied on Bar2D2 for fuel, this year's bigger crowd requires a bigger vessel. The krewe is set to summon the Barship Enterprise for all libation needs.

The parade orbits the Marigny starting at 8 p.m., then heads to the Trash Palace on Frenchmen St. for the annual Chewbacchanal.

The krewe is open to all. Find more info at their website.
