JP Prez John Young Running for Lt. Gov.

Next year's Lieutenant Governor's race picked up another Southeast Louisiana parish president on Tuesday. John Young, who currently serves as the top official in Jefferson Parish, announced his run for the state's no. 2 post.

Young, a Republican, made the announcement in a slick ad replete with images of bayous, children, workers and the French Quarter. The minute-long spot also features John Young on national television and John Young in a helicopter.

"I have a proud record of standing up for Louisiana, and I am running for Lieutenant Governor to be a strong voice on economic development, tourism and to preserve our unique Louisiana way of life," Young said in a release.

The lieutenant governor oversees the state's tourism campaign, as well as museums, parks and other state-run culture and recreation.

The field for the 2015 race opened up after current officeholder Jay Dardenne announced a plan to run for governor. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser already announced a run, and Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden has indicated he's interested. State Sen. Elbert Guillory, of Opelousas and chicken boxing advocacy fame, has also announced his candidacy.
