Joseph Street Going One-Wayby Brad Rhines Between Whole Foods, Pinkberry, Slice, and St. Joe’s Bar, poor little Joseph Street can’t get no relief. The narrow block between Magazine and Camp Streets has become a crowded corridor for Uptown shoppers coming from, going to, and parking along this busy stretch of Magazine. Well, no more - the City hopes. Starting Friday morning this block of Joseph Street will be converted from a two-way street to a one-way street, with traffic heading lakebound (from Magazine Street toward Camp Street).
With cars parked along both sides of the street, and with heavy car, bike, and foot traffic heading in both directions to and from Magazine Street, this particular block of Joseph Street has become a bottleneck for neighborhood residents. According to a press release from the mayor’s office, “A survey was mailed to nearby residents asking for feedback on the proposed traffic change. 100 percent of the returned surveys were in favor of the change to one-way traffic.”
The block of Joseph Street across Magazine Street, between Magazine and Constance, is already one way, a move intended to alleviate congestion caused by the Whole Foods parking lot. With increased development on the other side of the street, including Pinkberry, Cartes des Vins wine shop, and Romney Pilates—the holy trinity of the Uptown mom—things have gotten even more crowded. Making the block between Magazine and Camp one-way lakebound will provide an outlet for traffic trying to retreat from the crowded intersection, while Octavia and Arabella Streets will continue to serve as entry points.
The change will be done on a trial basis for now, and for the next six months the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works will monitor the effects of the new traffic pattern before deciding whether or not to make the decision permanent. |
