Joe Vitt Done Agonizing, Re-Takes Over as Saints Interim Head Coach

During his six game Bounty suspension, Joe Vitt missed his boys. "I agonized. I agonized," the Saints' Interim Head Coach, who returned to the team Sunday, told the media on Monday. "It's hard to go through. I mean, I've been with these guys for 7 years. I care very deeply, as Sean (Payton) does, for this football team, and when you're not there on gameday, win or lose, with guys that you respect and you love, It was a challenge." But, on the plus side, he saw more of his wife.

"There's nothing you can do to fill this void. Hey listen, my wife should win the Ed Block Courage Award," he said, referring to the NFL's annual accolade for sportsmanship and valor. "My wife is a great mother and a great wife, but she really became a great friend to me over this time."

With the punishment behind him, Vitt returned to the Saints' practice facility for work today. Despite the early show of emotion, Vitt was all business when it came to taking the team forward. After asking a reporter what a Cliff Note is during an exchange about how he was catching up on what he'd missed, Vitt described his process.

"I don't think anybody's ever confused me with a rocket scientist if that's what you're talking about," he said. "I'm going to take notes and see what the state of our football team is, and meet with the staff this afternoon and move forward."

With the return of Vitt,  the Who Dat Nation is tempted to think the Saints' lackluster defense is going to improve. But Vitt, who functions solely as the team's linebackers coach when Head Coach Payton is around, was quick to bat down that he changes anything.

"I'm a spoke on a wheel here. That's all I am," he said.

He only had praise for new Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

"I think Spags has done a good job with this defense," he said without being asked about Spagnuolo directly. "You don't make the plays and the goal line stands that they made yesterday unless these guys are fully committed.
