Joe Vitt Laments Saints Loss, Takes Some BlameThe first game back as Interim Head Coach was a rough one for Joe Vitt. The Broncos' 31-14 stampede over the Saints deflated a team and fan base that was starting to have something to believe in after two straight wins. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Vitt said he stood in front of the team and took responsibility for coaching mistakes.
"Listen to me, I have to stand before our football team and tell them that I’ve got to get better as a coach," he said.
Vitt specifically took responsibility for not calling a timeout with the Saints in possession of the ball just before halftime. He should've let Brees and the offense take a shot at getting a field goal, he said.
"It was important and we talked about how we needed points in the game," he said.
Vitt said he also blew two calls on 4th down-and-short-yardage. He said he shouldn't have taken a timeout during a 4th and 1 situation in the first quarter because everything was in place. In a 4th-and-1 during the third quarter, he said it was a mistake not to go for the first down.
"That’s a mistake on me," he said of the second flub. "I said this to you guys last week: This sport, this industry that we’re in, is not like riding a bike. Listen, I had to learn how to put my headset on last night, how to turn it on and communicate with both sides of the ball and get my feet grounded. So I’ve got to get better as a coach to give our football team a better chance to win.”
Vitt said he understands the Saints are in for a long season if the defense doesn't get better, but that doesn't mean the Saints will be seeing any changes.
"Understand this, it’s too late in the year to change schemes," he said. "We are what we are and we’re going to do what we have taught. Now that being said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. We’ll explore everything that we have to do to beat the Philadelphia Eagles." |
