Janelle Monae's Band Caught Lying Down On the Job at JazzFest Janelle Monae by Ryan Sparks Janelle Monae closed out the first weekend of Jazz Fest on the Gentilly Stage Sunday night with an energetic show. Her live band proved just as capable with their footwork as with their instrumental chops, churning through several choreographed dances through many of the songs. Monae’s charisma had thousands of members of the audience partaking as well.
After finishing her set with her two biggest hits, “Cold War” and “Tightrope,” Monae and her band disappeared for a brief moment then returned for an encore of “Come Alive.” As the song broke down into a bare bones call and response, Monae’s band all dropped onto their backs onstage. Monae turned her arms outward to the crowd and motioned like a mesmerist until the first few rows got the gist and knelt or laid on the ground as well, strewn as it was with the detritus of a day’s worth of cups, bottles, butts, and scraps. The movement fanned out through the crowd as the entire field got down save a few elderly fans who bent over as low as they could.
Monae got supine herself, continuing the Cab Calloway-esque call and response until the chorus returned—“That’s when we come ALIVE!”—and urged everyone back up with an exuberant leap. It was a great encore and a fitting end for several festival-goers who have only just started a week full of dancing like no one’s watching. |
