Illegible License Plates Targeted by State Police photo via the Bald Cypress by Shay Sokol The spelling on vanity plates doesn't have to be right, but a trooper better be able to read it. State Police announced this week that they will crackdown on obscured license tags statewide. A State Police press release on July 28, 2012 said the crackdown is “in response to numerous citizen and motorist complaints received throughout the state.” Obscured license plates include any tinted or fogged covers, novelty frames that hamper visibility of numbers, improper license plate lights, and mud.
If the numbers or letters on a license plate are obstructed in any way, the driver is subject to being ticketed, State Police said.
“The use of aftermarket covers for license tags has increased considerably in Louisiana. Most drivers are probably unaware that by using such covers or decorative lights they are probably in violation of the law. We are urging them to remove the aftermarket products now before being cited,” State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson said.
According to Edmonson, it is a public safety issue:
“It is imperative that the numbers or letters on the tag be visible and readable. When they are obscured it impairs accurate reporting by citizens who are attempting to provide police with information on reckless or impaired drivers, motor vehicle crashes, and vehicles involved in criminal acts.” |
