'Hurricane Bianca' Makes Landfall

New Orleans has no shortage of drag royalty, but Bianca Del Rio (nee Roy Haylock) is the queen of queens, the Daenerys  Targaryen of the NOLA scene. Del Rio made a national name for herself after wining Season 6 winner of “Rupaul's Drag Race.” On Friday (6.03), she is releasing a feature film, “Hurricane Bianca.”

Premiering today at the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival in Toronto, “Bianca” hits on some trending LGBT rights issues. Bianca stars as a New York school teacher who moves to a small Texas town and then gets fired because she is gay. The star then returns to the school in drag unrecognized and begins to exact vengeance on those who wronged her.

The Matt Kugelman directed feature also includes appearances from Rachel Dratch, Alan Cumming, Margaret Cho, RuPaul, as well as “RuPaul’s Drag Race” regulars Willam Belli, Shangela, Joslyn Fox, and Alyssa Edwards.

Funding for the work came heavily from crowdsourcing. Kugelman and Del Rio rewarded her loyal fans with lots of video clips along the way. Check one out below.

Del Rio often describes herself a "clown in a dress." She busted out onto the New Orleans entertainment scene back in 1998. Experienced in costume design and theatrical performances, she was a known name locally before busting onto the national scene through the television appearance.
