As Huffington Post-AOL Merger Roars, Will NOLA Whisper? The big news on the Internet today (or at least this minute) is the announcement that AOL and the Huffington Post are merging operations. Other than giving the larger media even more reason to give Arianna Huffington big, wet kisses, the merger raises all sorts of questions about what will happen to HuffPo's left-of-center, politically-minded content. Perhaps fittingly, this content includes guest columns that originate here, and get the word out to the world about our peculiar plight(s). As Editilla points out much more crudely this morning at the N.O. Ladder, "What does this mean for Nola bloggers?"
Well, since the merger is about 7 minutes old, we don't have an answer yet! But the HuffPo-NOLA pipeline has been wide open in recent months, with Harry Shearer, levees.org and Louisiana Weekly, all sharing content. During the Big Oozy, HuffPo trained even more focus on the Dirty Coast, sending investigative journalists and featuring blogs from environmental groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council. HuffPo even recently poached one of this town's few actual shoe leather reporters, as former Times-Picayune reporter Chris Kirkham is now scribing for the site's business section.
With the merger, Huffington will get control of all of AOL's news content. But there's no early indication that the new HuffPo will be the same as the old. Even though the high-minded company CEOs were "finishing each other's sentences" on the bold and noble vision front, they probably haven't talked about what happens when Shearer sends the former editors of the news-you-can-use-oriented Patch.com a missive about the inner workings of the Army Corps of Engineers.
Early analyses seem to indicate the backstory of the merger is all about profit. NOLA bloggers use the site to get attention for the causes they represent, but according to the well-publicized HuffPo business orthodoxy, they don't get paid. With the site taking a for-profit attitude into the future, there could be less room for unpaid content that doesn't generate as much money as Christina Aguilera singing poorly. Good thing we're used to shouting from the rooftops!  ’)

Not all New Orleans bloggers
Not all New Orleans bloggers are using HuffPo - in fact, most of the ones I know only occasionally link to it in numbers that have steadily gone down over the past few years. We are more than capable of finding and ferreting out our own news and illuminating the issues we care about. Happy Merger to Arianna (or, as Gambit editor Kevin Allman calls her, Satan's Botoxed Handmaiden) and I hope her writers start getting the monetary compensation they deserve.
