Houma: Child Killed in Fatal Dog Attack

A 4-year-old was killed Tuesday night in a fatal dog attack in Houma, according to the Houma Police Department. The incident took place inside the home of Megan Touchet around 7 p.m., when her daughter was suddenly attacked in their living room.

According to Houma Police Chief Todd M. Duplantis, the child was bitten numerous times on the face, shoulders, and back by the pitbull, who weighed 130 pounds. Touchet was able to free her daughter from their dog and call authorities. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

In a press conference this afternoon, explained that the details of the fatal attack were still murky. “The dog for some odd reason attacked the child,” said a shaken Duplantis.

Update, 2:40 p.m.: The victim's family created a GoFundMe  account to cover funeral expenses for the victim, Mia DeRouen. 261 people have donated over $13,000.

“The scene was pretty horrific inside the residence,” he said.

Duplantis said that at this point, there is “no reason to believe that the owners abused the dog.” The attacking dog was taken to a Houma animal shelter and put down, according to police.
