'Hospitality Zone' Bills to Get Local Airing Monday

Since the current state legislative session began, one issue has been threatening to boil up to the surface around here. No, we're not jealous that the pirogue was selected as the official state boat over the Natchez. There's a new special taxing district the City wants to create around the French Quarter, CBD, Treme and the 7th Ward known as the Hospitality and Entertainment District. It's designed to tax meals and hotel rooms to raise money for improvements to areas that tourists use. But as the bills are in the committee phase of the legislative process, some locals are saying they didn't get a fair hearing.

Over at American Zombie, our old skeptical friend Ashe Dambala renames the entity as the Hostility Zone, questioning provisions in the legislation that make the District's leadership - which would ultimately vote on spending of the tax money - unelected. He also argues that the new tax that would bleed over into the local citizenry.

"How much more can we exploit...tax...our own citizens before we cross the line and destroy what truly makes this city special?" he writes. " (Answering my own question) When the price of admission for local folks to get into the “Zone” is too high, you will most certainly destroy what makes this city special."

The legislature postponed hearing on the bills for now. In the meantime, the Vieux Carre Property Owners and Residents Association (VCPORA) is holding a meeting in the Zone tomorrow night to discuss the legislation. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at St. Mark's Church (1120 N. Rampart St.).
