Helm Paint Gives Cop Horses' Stables Makeover

The Big Easy’s four-legged enforcers now have a revamped stable. The home of NOPD’s Mounted Unit (Marconi Dr. & Harrison Avenue) just got a makeover, and they have the local painters union and Helm Paint to thank.

In a city famous for Mardi Gras, cops-on-horseback are more than just a novelty for tourists and photo-happy locals. There are more than 20 police officers in the mounted unit, and their horses' homes were in need of a paint job.

Helm Paint & Supply, along with the Local Painters and Allied Trades District #80, took three hours and 30 people to refinish 27 stalls with waterproof coats. Deputy Chief Darryl Albert said the success of the project represents the possibilities of public-private partnerships.

“Sergeant Catalanotto and Commander Jeff Walls reached out to the business community who was generous enough to cooperate and put this whole thing together,” said Albert.

The Chief said that New Orleans’ mounted unit is vital in a city that attracts such massive crowds. “We are the best in crowd control, and a big part of that is our mounted division,” said Albert.

Sergeant Joseph Catalanotto said NOPD is grateful for the donation. “We’re very gracious for them donating their products. The local painters union utilized their apprenticeship program to come out here,” said the Sergeant.

Helm Paint’s Chip Fleetwood said the painters’ union was grateful for the opportunity, since so many trainees need the practice. “We did have a lot of volunteers, but we have a lot of apprentices that are just learning the trade,” said Fleetwood. “Anything to help these guys. These are the people that keep us safe, so when we got the call to get the opportunity to come out here, this is what we do. It’s a win-win for both of us.”
