Harvest the Music Returns Wednesdayby April Siese Harvest the Music, the concert series benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank returns tomorrow to Lafayette Square. Running every Wednesday from September 19 - October 24, Harvest the Music acts as the benevolent fall incarnate of Wednesdays at the Square, a springtime tradition also in Lafayette Square. In addition to bountiful music offerings, the series supports the work of Second Harvest Food Bank. As the run starts this year, need in the community from the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac, as well as at Second Harvest itself.
While the organization didn’t have any damage to its building they “had the same problems as everyone else,” explains Terri Kaupp, with Second Harvest, “We had no power until Friday afternoon and no phones until Saturday. As soon as we assessed the damage though, we were back to work that same Friday.”
The six week slate includes local fest favorites like Anders Osborne and Rebirth Brass Band, along with heavy-hitting talent from the likes of North Mississippi Allstars, JJ Grey and Mofro, Dr. John and the Lower 911, and The Iguanas, who kick things off with Los Po-Boy-Citos tomorrow night at 5pm. Admission is free, with proceeds from food and beverage purchases going to Second Harvest Food Bank.
“One of our perks is you can buy food and beverage tickets online. That way you don’t have to stand in line,” Kaupp says.
Besides food donations and ticket purchases, Second Harvest is always in need of volunteers. You can call them directly at (504) 734-1322 for opportunities. “Talk to a coordinator to see. We have volunteers from Tuesday through Saturday. You can help out in our repack room sorting donated food or at the concerts,” continues Kaupp.
Opportunities are still available for tomorrow’s concert as well. For more information, visit harvestthemusic.org |
