Defender Picks

Great Scott! Future Day Drinks

As anyone with a social media account is well aware, today is “Future Day.” In the cinematic classic Back to the Future, Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel forward in time to today October 21, 2015. With the prediction fact-checking played out, NoDef went searching for a local angle. Not surprisingly, we found it in a bar.

Great Scott! Steve Yamada and Brad Smith of Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29 crafted a special menu for the occasion. A self declared nerd, Future Day was practically Yamada’s density. I mean destiny. “I was thinking that it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. Brad and I were talking about how much we like the film. Then, a bunch of people in the bar joined in. We figured that we only have one chance to commemorate it,” Yamada

The menu kicks off with “Where We're Going, We Don't Need Roads.” The menu explains, “No hover boards? No flying cars? No worries! Enjoy this cocktail that features chicory liqueur balanced with demererara and blackstrap rums.”

Of course, Huey Lewis also feels the power of the love. The second cocktail of the same name receives the following writeup. “A real shot to the heart! Two over proof rums swizzled together with spice and lime.”

Finally, Latitude 29 offers the “Great Scott/This Is Heavy.” The massive tiki bowl promises the potential to “rip a hole in the space time continuum!”

Get to Latitude 29 fast. The specials only run from 3p.m. to 6p.m. and you can't go back in time!

A few blocks into the CBD, true fanboys and fangirls can make a second stop at Compere Lapin. Bartender Abigail Gullo is crafting some “Flux Capacitors.”
