Grand Palace Hotel Implosion Slated for SundayEarly Sunday morning, the state is planning to implode the 60-year-old Grand Palace Hotel on the corner of Claiborne and Canal July 22 at 8:00am to make way for the construction of University Medical Center. Earlier this month, a fire in the upper levels of the former hotel did not deter plans to demolish the blighted has-been. Before plotting where to set up your lawn chairs, make sure you don’t end up in the dust cloud. Here's some info about the implosion itself and streets that will be closed:
The 17-story building will be demolished using explosives tactically placed to collapse the structure inwardly. The building will fall in less than 10 seconds after detonation, sending a plume of dust that will mostly fall within half a block of the structure. Light dust is expected to linger through five or six blocks of city streets for about a half hour as a result of the implosion. The state Department of Environmental Quality inspected the building, and said it is free of toxic materials.
Once the implosion is over, authorities will check the area to ensure that it is safe. The state Department of Transportation and Development will also inspect the I-10 overpass to ensure that it is "structurally sound and safe for drivers," according to the city. Crews will then remove debris will be removed from the overpass if necessary.
To keep the area safe, street closures and mandatory evacuations will be enforced by the city and state.
The I-10 will be closed at 7:00am, and will reopen after the dust has settled and an inspection has deemed the area safe. The closure is expected to last several hours.
Residents between Bienville to Tulane and S. Villere to S. Johnson are required to evacuate by 7:00pm on July 21.
Businesses in the surrounding area will be evacuated at 2:00am on July 22. Firefighters and police officers will clear out buildings in the area.
Additionally, the state is planning extra precautions for the Iberville housing development that arose as a result of residents about being too close to the implosion. The state is offering bus service for residents on the morning of the implosion between 5 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. The bus service is voluntary, and will include a light breakfast. Residents who remain in the housing development are being asked to turn off fans and air conditioning between 7:45 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
