Governor John Bel Edwards to Deliver LSU Commencement Address

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards is scheduled to deliver this year’s keynote address at Louisiana State University’s 292nd Commencement Ceremony on May 12. In the official announcement on Tuesday, LSU President F. King Alexander said, “Gov. Edwards has a long history of service to Louisiana, and we look forward to hearing the message he delivers to our graduates as they embark on the next stage of their lives.”

Edwards was elected governor in November 2015, following eight years serving District 72 in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He has built a career on promoting social change in the state, rescinding religious freedom orders, supporting the legalization of medical marijuana, and advocating for the protection of all citizens, including transgendered Louisianans

He is currently in the midst of the 168th Louisiana Legislature session, where he is championing causes like closing the gender wage gap, adopting a state minimum wage, tackling the state’s opioid epidemic, and expanding Medicaid and social healthcare programs.

According to LSU, there will be open admission to the main ceremony for anyone who wants to hear Edwards's words of encouragement to the LSU graduating class.
