Gizmo Glory: Remote Control Leaves the Couch at CTIA Wireless Show Last week was music nirvana, but this week there is a gadget god in New Orleans, as the city hosts the gigantic CTIA Wireless Show in the Convention Center through Thursday. The tech world is shortcircuiting at the sight of everything you can do without cords. Among the highlights: Your Cadillac will now come with an iPad, but Ford lets you control the whole car without your hands. Raising the big brother bar even further, AT&T has a new group of devices that provides camera views of your house, and remote control access. So much for sneaking a midnight snack in peace. Meanwhile, Fierce Wireless has pictures of all the show's fancy phones, but as ever the really fierce competition is on TV.
Like pre-World War I Europe, the wireless industry is a world of shifting alliances. Six months ago, AT&T almost bought T-Mobile. But this week T-Mobile is unveiling new ads that take shots at its near-partner. Taking a shot at the speed of AT&T's iPhone network, T-Mobile shows a motorcycle whizzing by a slower hog in a blur. The slower one, of course, is AT&T. We'd prefer a tractor float to represent the network's snail pace during Mardi Gras, but we get the point.
