Funeral Arrangements for Uncle Lionel Batiste Announced

Today, New Orleans is gearing up to celebrate the life of the late Uncle Lionel Batiste in grand second line style, just like we know he would want it. And it won't be the last time he's sent off like a New Orleans icon. Today, the family released details of the funeral arrangements for the Tremé Brass Band bass drummer and New Orleans legend, who died Sunday after a battle with cancer.

On Thursday, July 19, there will be a public viewing at Charbonnet Funeral Home (1615 St. Philip Street, Tremé  ) from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The following day, funeral services will be held at Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts in Armstrong Park, beginning with Uncle Lionel lying in state at 9 a.m. The funeral service starts at 11 a.m.

A jazz funeral procession will follow the funeral services from Mahalia Jackson Theater, with burial to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery (4100 Norman Mayer Blvd.). The route for the jazz funeral will be announced later.

Those wish to donate to the "Uncle" Lionel Memorial Fund to assist the family with medical and funeral expenses can go to and press "Donate," or visit any Liberty Bank and Trust branch.
