Flight of Fancy: Armstrong Airport Receives Additional Funding & Support from NOLA Government

The New Orleans Aviation Board (NOAB) passed a vote to finance the $993 million expansion of Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY)’s North Terminal, according to an official release from the New Orleans Mayor’s Office. Yesterday’s vote awarded the project approximately $178 million in additional funds, bringing the pricetag to its current near-billion dollar price point.

February 2019 will mark the opening of the five gate expansion, upping the total number of gates to 35 for the international airport. Construction on the North Terminal is already underway, and is expected to be completely within the two year deadline. Further design and environmental reviews are anticipated to be approved later this spring.

“Due to the extraordinary growth at the airport, [and] the airlines’ increase in flights,” Louis Armstrong Airport’s Interim Director of Aviation Mark Reis said, “we are now positioned to continue to be an economic engine for the region.”

Mayor Mitch Landrieu agreed. “Our brand new, world-class airport terminal will serve as a crucial economic driver for the New Orleans metropolitan region and provide a lasting impression to visitors,” commented Mayor Landrieu. “We are growing at a record pace.[..] I am confident this world class facility will be well worth the wait in 2019.”
