Micah Short

Yesterday, police said Micah Short, 21, fatally struck his 2-month-old daughter in the head because she wouldn’t stop crying, marking the second murder of a baby in New Orleans in one week. The incident happened in Gert Town, on the 3300 block of Fern Street around 8:00a.m. When Short and his wife arrived at the hospital with their daughter yesterday, the couple initially said Short was carrying the baby, and had tripped over a box, hitting the baby’s head against the crib by accident.

But during further questioning, after the baby could not be resuscitated, Micah Short confessed to what really happened. According to police, Short admitted to striking his daughter in the head because she wouldn’t stop crying.

Yesterday, Micah Short was booked with Second Degree Cruelty to his 2-month-old baby, and Domestic Abuse Battery, which Short committed against his wife in an incident that occurred last March. Today, after the Coroner determined the baby’s death as a Homicide due to Blunt Force Trauma to the head, Short was additionally booked with First Degree Murder.

This is the second incident of an infant death at the hands of a caretaker in one week. Excessive crying was the reason Angela Bernard, 39, gave for brutally beating to death a 3-month-old last week.
