Feet for FessOn September 29, get costumed as your favorite musician and race down Tchoupitoulas to support NOLA's high school marching bands. Then enjoy some music from Dr. John, Ellis Marsali, and Jon Cleary at Tip's.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band classic “My Feet Can’t Fail Now” takes on a new meaning next month at Tipitina’s first annual Rhythm and Blues 5k Run, an event sponsored by the Tipitina’s Foundation to benefit local high school marching bands. The newest race on New Orleans’ running calendar takes place on the evening of Saturday, September 29, and will be followed by a benefit concert to renovate and preserve the family home of Professor Longhair.
Starting a 5:00pm, runners will take off from Tipitina’s, at the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street. The course is an out-and-back along Tchoup, and participants will run to the beat of New Orleans high school marching bands playing instruments donated by Tipitina’s Foundation along the route. In keeping with the theme, costumes of famous musicians and groups are encouraged. According to a press release from the Tipitina’s Foundation, “Proceeds from the 5K Run will go toward providing New Orleans area high school marching band programs with uniforms, particularly the standard shoes that are required to march.”
After the race, Tip’s will host the benefit concert “Fess’ House Party New Orleans Style,” featuring Dr. John, Ellis Marsalis, Jon Clearly, and more. George Porter, Jr. will be leading the house band for the night. Proceeds from the concert will go towards restoring the Fess family home, which eventually hopes to feature a museum dedicated to the legendary New Orleans piano man.
According to Tipitina’s owner and Tipitina’s Foundation co-founder Mary von Kurnatowski, “There are very few people and places that are as inextricably linked as Professor Longhair and Tipitina’s – spiritually, artistically, emotionally, and historically – and we just felt like it would be a missed golden opportunity not to preserve his home.”
