Fair Grounds Summer Races to Feature Ostriches, Camelsby Shay Sokol Ostriches and camels will race at the Fair Grounds on August 18 at the Race Course’s first ever summer night card. The special nighttime event is a part of the twelve-day Summer Quarter Horse season starting August 15, and will feature a “Tails & Ales” beer tasting, quick sprint American Quarter Horse races, along with the two exotic animal races.
The American Quarter Horse, known for its ability over short sprints, can reach as high as 55 miles per hour, and competes at sprint distances from 220 yards to 870 yards. Fair Grounds’ fifth Summer Quarter Horse Meet opens August 15 and continues Wednesdays to Sunday through September 1. First post is 12:40 p.m. everyday except August 18, when first post is 4:00pm. General admission for live racing is free everyday except the special night race on August 18.
On August 18, the “Tales & Ales” beer tasting will feature craft beers from breweries throughout the region. The beer tasting will require a separate ticket. Later in the evening, ostriches and camels will compete in two separate, exotic races. More details for the August 18 events, including ticketing and pricing, will be announced later this week.
A press release issued today by Jim Mulvihill, Communications and Pari-Mutuel Marketing Manager of the race course, says of the twelve-day summer season:
“Average daily overnight purses of $140,000 are complemented by a rich stakes schedule worth $410,000, with added-money events scheduled on half of the racing days. The stakes action kicks off with the 350-yard Treme Stakes for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds on Aug. 16. The meet’s richest day is Closing Day, Sept. 1, with three stakes, topped by the $150,000 (estimated) Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Sales Futurity for 2-year-old Louisiana-breeds. The trials for that event will comprise the Opening Day program on Aug. 15.” |
