Voodoo Fest Interactive Art: Face ForwardFor the last few years, Voodoo Fest has been ramping up its arts scene, with the goal of creating an “experience” of music, art and food substance to further alter the minds of its teenagers. One of this year’s artistic contributions is Face Forward, a huge interactive metal face controlled by onlookers.
Creator Christian Ristow has taken Face Forward all over the country, from the Maker Faire Bay Area in San Francisco to Baltimore Artscape and Burning Man. At Voodoo, it sits in the “Field of Dreams,” between the Le Carnival and Le Plur stages. Made of giant shining metal strips, the sculpture’s major fascia are controlled by a series of levers some thirty feet away. Ristow invites the public (that’s you!) to move the levers, raising the face’s eyebrows, moving its eyeballs and opening its mouth in a “constant ‘river’ of facial expressions”.
Made for contact with its audience, the sculpture invites group participation, with ten or more observers working together to create a recognizable emotion or mood. Though not all of the levers seemed to be functioning when yours truly tried it, the face was still highly expressive, its reflective silver eyes gazing into the sky over City Park.
Ristow’s work includes other huge interactive sculptures, like the Hand of Man (a hydraulic hand and forearm capable of crushing cars) as well as smaller metalworks and the intriguingly named Robochrist Industries. If you’re heading to the fest on its last day, take a minute to play with Face Forward. |
