EWE's 'The Governor's Wife' Premiers Tonight (VIDEO)

Today, the Saints put 35 points on the board, and tonight former governor Edwin Edwards will try to score some (Nielsen) points of his own. The Silver Fox's much ballyhooed reality television show, The Governor's Wife, debuts at 9p.m. tonight on A&E. Edwards' wit and Gonzales charm abound in the opener.

The tale of the 84-year-old, four-term governor's marriage to Trina Edwards, 50 years his junior, is well told, replete with reference to its prison pen pal origins. However, the television series attempts to place a modern spin on the affair. The producers opted to make Trina the focus.

Also entering the mix are EWE's two 60-something daughters, Anna and Victoria. Neither of the sisters are particularly pleased that their father fell in love with a young divorcee while serving time. Throw Trina's taste for stunts like dancing her way out of a giant birthday cake into the mix, and A&E finds themselves with television gold.

The first episode focuses on a surprise birthday party for da' Guv, as well as said plan for Trina to hide in a cake. Anna delivers the zinger, “You spent a year rehabilitating your gold digger, trashy-for-marrying-an-old-man reputation. I don’t think jumping out of a cake is going to help.” The second plot revolves around the newlyweds' decision to have a child. (In case you were curious, Edwards had the foresight to have his sperm frozen before prison.) Victoria displays her own wit, crowing, “Since most of our inheritance went to the federal government, now it’s going to be split between four?”
