Daiquiri Festival Recipe Recruits
Daiq Fest isn’t until August 18, but frozen mixologists only have one more day to submit their recipes and win a chance to see their custom Daiquiri featured at the festival. The festival will be at 4000 St. Claude, and Daiquiri lovers can come refresh themselves with one of New Orleans’ most loved and most controversial outdoor beverages. Jeremy Thompson of the Open House New Orleans Company (OH NO co.) is a Daiquiri lover and major organizer, and he wants to bring in the city’s best bartending brains for a celebration of his favorite cocktail.
“It’s essentially the the biggest symbol for outdoor drinking, which is very specific to New Orleans,” said Thompson. “We have all these great new ingredients, access to handmade bitters, and they [Daiquiris] create so much revenue for the city.”
In addition to receiving one of four spots as one of the fest’s featured frozen Daiquiris, winners receive prizes donated from sponsors. If you’re interested in a lagniappe bag of Daiq Swag and a month in the spotlight with your winning daiquiri featured in one of the Daiquiri machines at the new bar St. Lawrence in the Quarter, register here.
The submission guidelines are on the event’s facebook page. Contestants must stick to tradition and use Sailor Jerry Rum as the base spirit, with all other spirits at a cost of less than $25 per liter. The cost per serving must be $3 (not including Sailor Jerry Rum), and ingredients must be easily accessible in mass quantities. Needless to say, all submissions must be of the FROZEN variety, since the handshaken daiquiri has had its time in the culinary spotlight.
