Culture Collision, Party with a Purpose

Whether you’re part of a culturally sustaining nonprofit or just a lover of the arts, tomorrow night’s 4th Annual Culture Collision has something in store for you. All are invited to the preview of this season's offerings, which has grown too large for its NOMA britches and is moving to Generations Hall (310 Andrew Higgins Drive). 60 local non-profits geared towards the visual and performing arts will be tabling from 5:30-8pm, offering guests chances to get involved, win free tickets, and more. Admission is free, and there’s a party afterwards with free food, a cash bar, and music from the Ratty Scurvics.

Guests can network for the first couple of hours, mingling with nonprofits such as Big Class, The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Creative Alliance of New Orleans to the music of DJ Matty. New on the scene this year are organizations like Pelican Bomb, Press Street, and the Indian Arts Circle of New Orleans.

Loyola University Communications Coordinator and Culture Collision organizer Jessica Brown is thrilled to include such a diverse group of artsy allies. “The Indian Arts Circle is really big within the Indian Cultural Society. They bring these really highly acclaimed Indian artists—directors, sitar players, percussionists, and they put on some really high quality concerts.”

Brown referred to the event as a “party with a purpose,” and the coordinator said she’s expecting quite a turnout considering the event’s rapid growth from year to year. Last year’s hosted 48 organizations, and 1700 people came to network and get involved. If the networking isn’t incentive enough, there will be a raffle where guests can get cool prizes just for showing up.

“All of the organizations throw in a pair of tickets or a season pass or merch and give a prize away every fifteen minutes,” Brown said.

Anyone who donates Event's Website receive a drink ticket and will be automatically entered into the raffle.

Although a few of the restaurants on the list to provide free food had to drop out due to Isaac, St. Lawrence, La Divina, and John Besh’ American Sector will be serving up tasty and sophisticated treats.

The after party will begin at 8pm, featuring a cash bar and live music from the Ratty Scurvics. “We’re thrilled that Ratty has come on to be our performer—Generations Hall has been great as well,” Brown said.

Brown said Culture Collision’s ultimate goal is to benefit New Orleans art community and encourage people to get involved, volunteer, and do whatever they can to support local culture. “We do this to give back to the community. It’s never going to be a money maker,” she said.
