Upon arrival, officers met with the victim, who claimed he was walking toward the intersection when an unknown black vehicle pulled up and fired one round at him, then fled in a downtown direction. The victim was transported to the hospital. During the investigation, detectives determined the victim lied about the incident due to the fact that the incident occurred in the middle of the day on a busy thoroughfare, and that the victim’s description of the incident was vague. Once confronted with the evidence that contradicted his account of what happened, the victim confessed that he shot himself while trying to remove his handgun from his backpack to his waistband. The victim gave a general location of where he had stashed the weapon. Detectives returned to the scene, recovered the weapon, which they discovered later was stolen in Jefferson Parish.
