Construction Starts at Former St. Claude Ave. School

The St. Roch Market isn't the only iconic building on St. Claude Ave. getting a revival. Construction also started recently at the former McDonogh no. 16 building, located at the corner of Pauger. The building, which was once on the Louisiana Landmarks Society's nine most endangered buildings list, will become the McDonogh 16 Home for the Aged.

The renovation, which is being undertaken by CCNO, LLC, is a mix of new construction and renovation to the building, and will result in 68 units for the elderly. According to the Landmarks Society, the E.A. Christy-designed building was erected in 1908 as the city used the McDonogh Building Fund to construct 35 schools.

The Orleans Parish School Board at one time planned to demolish the building after it sat neglected, but ended up selling it off amid last year's massive property purge.

Construction is expected to be complete in late 2013.
