Concerts in the Courtyard Return in the French Quarterby Emma Boyce The Historic New Orleans Collection (533 Royal St.) celebrates fall with their annual courtyard series of three concerts. The concerts, which generally fall on the third Friday of the month, have featured everyone from Rebirth, Teresa Anderson, the Treme Brass Band to the Tin Men. Tonight, the series kicks it off with local pianist Paul Soniat and acoustic guitarist John Rankin. Guests can look forward to an evening filled with drinks and music in a classic French Quarter courtyard setting. There is a different drink sponsor at every show. Southern Eagle will provide Stella Artois for this concert, but according to Anne Robichaux of The Historic New Orleans Collection wine and soft drinks are also available.
On October 19, the courtyard series continues with the Palmetto Bug Stompers, a raw New Orleans jazz band that will get anyone out of their seat and onto their feet. With Washboard Chaz on the mic, Will Smith on trumpet, Paul Roberson on tombone, Seva Venet on guitar, Robert Snow on acoustic bass, Bruce Brachman on clarinet and John Rodli on guitar and vocals this promises to be an entertaining show.
The series finishes strong on November 16 with Jayna Morgan and the Sazerac Sunrise Jazz Band, a group that has performs in both the Crescent City and the Big Apple. Music for all shows start at 6 PM and people are encouraged to enjoy themselves until 8 PM.
The Courtyard concerts have been a highlight for the Historic New Orleans Collection since it started up in 2008. While they do three shows in fall they also hold four shows in the spring, avoiding the months where the weather turns either too hot or too cold to endure the elements.
Robichaux remarks that the concerts fill up quickly because of the nature of a small, courtyard space. “It’s a happy hour kind of show,” she says. “It’s not like going to Preservation Hall, it’s designed primarily for a standing audience.”
Admission for each concert costs $10 dollars for non-THNOC members and is free for members. Admission includes up to three complementary drinks. |
