Clutch Cakes

Haydel’s king cakes are a Carnival Season tradition, but that doesn’t mean the fabled bakery is opposed to throwing in a new touch every now and then. This year, Haydel’s new touch will be a throw. Their cakes will include a miniature version of the Mystic Krewe of Nyx’s signature throw—a decorated purse.

“For the last 26 years, Haydel’s Bakery has placed small mementos of Mardi Gras in the center of our king cakes,” said David Haydel, Jr. “We chose to highlight the Mystic Krewe of Nyx this year as a way to celebrate its historic achievement of becoming the first all-female super krewe in New Orleans.”

Haydel's bakery annually churns out 55,000 during Mardi Gras time The bakery normally has a staff of 25 full-time employees but during Mardi Gras the bakery hires on an additional 60 temporary employees to help make and sell a whopping 2500 King Cakes daily. Even with that massive amount of King Cakes the bakery still usually sells out before the day is done. The institution has four locations during Mardi Gras, their brick and mortar on Jefferson and three pop-ups (two in Metairie and one in New Orleans).

Only in their fifth year, Nyx quickly ascended to the rank of super-krewe. They now tout themselves as the largest all female krewe in the city. In 2016, they will roll on February 3rd.

The king cakes, starting at $14.50, are on sale at all Haydel’s Bakery locations and online at haydelbakery.com.
