Charity Poker Crawl Sweetens the Pot for the Roots of Music

by Mary-Devon Dupuy

Tourists come to New Orleans to drink legally on the streets, stay in bars until the sun comes up, and hopefully, to see live music played by artists born and raised in the city. Locals might embrace the drinking culture, but the sad reality is that it doesn’t feel anything like “The Big Easy,” for musicians trying to make a living off of the very work that makes New Orleans such an exceptional American city. Local bar owners Jim Monaghan and Troy Koehlar decided four years ago that they wanted to do something to support local music, and the Charity Poker Crawl to Benefit the Roots of Music was born.

The Roots of Music is a tuition-free, comprehensive music education program for children ages 9-14. Founder Derrick Tabb, who is also a longtime drummer with the Rebirth Brass Band, was one of ten “CNN Heroes,” finalists in 2009. The organization’s pint-sized virtuosos have been invited to Pasadena to perform before the 2013 Rose Bowl, but they’ll need $365,000 to do it.

Poker Crawl organizer and Molly’s at the Market manager Trey Monaghan said that after he saw the kids playing outside the Mint three years ago, he fell in love with the organization.

“I absolutely couldn’t stop doing everything possible for them. The second you see the kids, it’s pretty clear why it’s an important thing in the city and why everyone should be on board with trying to the kids to Pasadena,” he said.

Monaghan says the poker crawl idea is just “a fun way to get drunk.” Participants walk around in a big group and eventually wind up at six bars: Erin Rose, Boondock Saint, Turtle Bay, Flanagan’s, Molly’s, and 13. Each participant receives one card per bar, and each person compares their hands once the crawl ends at 13. The player with the best hand wins a prize, but so does the player with the worst hand, so don’t be discouraged.

If you’ve got a competitive streak or if you just really want to support young local talent, you can exchange bad cards for $10 a pop. Prizes include weekend cruises, hotel stays, massages, and more, Monaghan said.

“It’s really our honor, for both the Monaghans and Koehlars to be helping such a wonderful organization,” he said.

Monaghan said that in the last four years, the poker crawls have raised close to $40,000 total. That’s impressive, but the Marching Crusaders will need a lot more than that to keep making headlines. Even if you’re not usually much of a gambler, the poker crawl is still a great excuse to get your drink on before noon. Besides, when you bet on local talent in New Orleans, the odds are always in your favor.
