CBD Building Collapses Onto Singha Thai Cafe Photos by Sarah Esenwein  Owners of Singha Thai Cafe (413 Carondelet St.) woke up this morning to the news that the structure under construction above the eatery had collapsed into the well liked CBD eatery. Around 2 a.m., an unsound, four-story structure under construction next door failed, falling in through the roof of the cafe.
The entirety of the roof crushed into the cafe dining room. According to the New Orleans Fire Department, no one was injured in the collapse. Upon seeing that there was no fire at the building, the matter was passed off to the city building inspector. The cause remains under investigation.
Around lunchtime Tuesday, the cafe would normally be bustling. Instead, sentiments of disappointment were echoed by a half dozen or so passersby,
'Oh no, that's one of the best Thai places in the city!' one exclaimed. "It's just so sad, I feel horrible for the owners. This is our favorite lunch spot." said cafe regular Andreanecia Morris.
The owner, who identified himself as Mr. Dior, was also at the scene surveying the wreckage.
"It's very terrible." he said. |
