Caretaker Beat Baby To Death, Police Say Angela Bernard by Shay Sokol NOPD has ruled that a 3-month-old was murdered Sunday after the caretaker beat the baby because she wouldn’t stop crying. Angela Bernard, 39, dropped the baby after bathing her, and hit her in the face, leg and back. The Coroner’s Office said the baby, RyanJae Mitchell, suffered a lacerated liver, broken ribs, and widespread bruisings. Blood had pooled under her eyes.
At 4:30 a.m. yesterday, Bernard called 911 from her home in the 4600 block of Flake Ave. in New Orleans East. According to a police report, Bernard said she tried resuscitating the baby with coaching from the operator, and no results. EMS transported the baby to Tulane Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
After the Corner’s Office determined the baby had been murdered, NOPD Child Abuse detectives approached Bernard this afternoon to ask questions, since Bernard was the only person with RyanJae when she became unresponsive Sunday morning. Bernard admitted to hitting the child repeatedly because the baby wouldn’t stop crying.
Bernard was booked with First Degree Murder and Child Neglect. |
