Brigade Coffee Truck Makes First Pours in Bywater, Freret by Brad Rhines UPTOWN - Freret pedestrians got an extra jolt this morning, thanks to Brigade Coffee Company. New Orleans’ newest addition to the burgeoning food truck scene opened on Freret Street in the Company Burger parking lot, serving up coffee drinks from their own roasted, farm-sourced beans. Inspired by coffee culture in Los Angeles and New York City, owner Shawn Parsons decided the time was right for New Orleans to step up its caffeine game.
Parsons, originally from Alabama, comes to New Orleans after stints in Los Angeles, where food trucks thrive, and New York, where vendors like The Mudtruck prove that trucks aren’t just for food. Our own coffee culture dates back nearly 200 years, as New Orleans was a favorite port for Latin American coffee planters since the 18th century. Now, Parsons believes it’s time for a “third wave” coffee shop in the city, one that focuses not only on pouring a good cup, but also on responsibly sourced beans roasted with care.
Brigade Coffee Company operates out of a refurbished Citroen H Van, vans which were produced by the French car company after WWII. While nearly a half million of the vans were produced, Parsons, who shipped the van from Belgium, says only about 50 are operating in the U.S.
Brigade Coffee Company will be parked on Freret Street starting at 9:00am on Saturday and Sunday, then heads to the Bywater on Monday. For updates, check them out on Facebook and Twitter. |
