Defender Picks

Brennan's Closes Doors

Brennan's closed their doors unexpectedly this morning, after a long legal battle between family members Ted and Owen "Pip" Brennan. Employees were outside of the restaurant collecting their last checks.

The historic restaurant is not closing for lack of business, as tourists and longtime patrons are still arriving expecting breakfast. The building was sold in a Sheriff's auction last month, according to a complaint filed in federal court on May 11.

According to a member of a private security firm guarding the building, the doors were locked this morning when they arrived to do their routine pickup.

One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said that someone from the Sheriff's Office came at 4pm yesterday and locked the doors. The employee was told by co workers to arrive this morning and pick up a last check outside of the Courthouse. Throughout the morning, there has been a steady trickle of employees arriving to get their last paychecks.

A lawyer was at the scene, as well as a number of contractors. One of the contractors, who also wished to remain anonymous told NoDef, "I have been working at Brennan's for a long time. This is sad."

UPDATE: 11:15am

Attorney Benjamin W. Janke is representing the new owner of the building, Terry White. Janke said that he would be representing White, who is out of the country right now.

When asked whether or not White would maintain a restaurant in the space, he replied, "I can't comment any further on that operation."

Janke was able to tell NoDef that White owns the building, not the Brennan's business.

The article was updated again at 1:20pm to include details about the sale of Brennan's at a Sheriff's auction in May.
