Big History Back at Voodoo

Electronic audiences are accustomed to one-man-shows, but local band Big History believes that soulful vocals, instrumentation, and synthy beats can co-exist. Sunday, November 3,  Amanda Wuerstlin, Meg Roussel, Blandon Helgason, Cory Schultz, and Matt Glynn are playing Voodoo for the second year in a row.

Big History’s sound falls somewhere in between a typical female-led soul ensemble and laptop pop, although they gravitate towards the former. Although the locals stray from tradition, vocalist Meg Roussel’s smoky vocals warm up their synthy dance music. The band formed in 2010.

Helgason said that after a year of regrouping and an extensive search for a new drummer, Big History was thrilled with the invitation back to play City Park for Voodoo.

“We are a little shocked because we didn’t put out a new album yet,” he said.

Although they have not recorded another album, Helgason said their sound is evolving. “

I think we’re going to utilize real instruments a little more,” Helgason said with regards to their upcoming album.

“We’re working on another full length, but there’s no official release date or anything yet,” he said.

In terms of Sunday’s set, Helgason said fans can expect a more sophisticated light show than in 2012, as well as a more traditional musical performance.

“We eliminated the laptops on stage as much as we could,” said Helgason. “We actually just hooked up with a lighting engineer. We’re hoping to improve the way our light show looks as well as the way that [we sound].”

Big History is playing Sunday, November 3, on the Carnival Stage at 11:30 a.m.
